When people come to therapy, they come in with the idea that they are trying to “fix” themselves as if they are irreparably broken. But the truth is that we all have our flaws- this is what makes us unique. Some flaws are more useful than others and some work better in certain situations- creating complete messes in other situations. The idea is that we’ve all become experts in our own lives, learning how to code-switch our way into spaces. In other words, we’ve learned how to navigate a system that may not have been built for us. On the other hand, we may struggle with learning how to find our own voice, feeling drowned by the expectations that have been placed on us and/or that we have placed on ourselves. We may struggle with finding an identity outside of family, friends, careers, earnings, and/or our education.
In individual therapy, you will learn ways to practice self-compassion and kindness towards yourself. You will learn to chill. You will begin to understand generational trauma and break some of those unwanted patterns that may no longer serve you.
