More About Evelyn

Evelyn Farias

is a bilingual, queer first-generation Latinx associate professional clinical counselor. She grew up in the San Fernando Valley, raised by a single mom who immigrated from Mexico.

After high school, Evelyn moved to Northern California where she received her Bachelor of Science in Community and Regional Development from the University of California at Davis. Following undergrad, she worked for UC Davis full-time as a student affairs officer for the gender, sexuality, and women’s studies department. In this role, she worked with countless first-generation students who not only struggled to adjust to the predominantly White institution, but also to find a therapist who understood their identities and experiences–challenges she was also personally familiar with. Supporting students through these journeys inspired Evelyn to become a mental health therapist.

Evelyn received a Master of Education in Bilingual-Spanish Latinx Mental Health and a Master of Arts in Psychological Counseling from Columbia University in New York City. During her time in NYC, she continued to work with first-gen students, while receiving specialized training to provide culturally and linguistically congruent mental health care to immigrant communities. Evelyn combines her knowledge of queer and feminist theory with psychological frameworks and evidence-based practices to provide culturally affirming care to BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ individuals.

As a queer, first-generation Latinx woman, she understands the difficulties of navigating multiple, sometimes opposing, cultural spaces and often feeling as though you’re neither here, nor there. Evelyn is passionate about working with other queer and BIPOC folks who are the “first” or “only”–first in your family or community to pursue a certain path, the only queer or Latinx person in your workplace, or navigating new territory with few, if any, support. Whether you’re dealing with imposter syndrome, burnout, or simply trying to understand yourself better, Evelyn’s got your back.

Healing doesn’t mean we stop being imperfect. Rather, it’s about learning to embrace the messy parts of ourselves with compassion and maybe even a little humor.
